Kazakh rugs come from the nomadic pastoral culture of the Kazakh people, who moved across the vast steppes of what’s now Kazakhstan and neighboring regions.
Rugs were not decoration first — they were essential tools
Initialy Used for:
Insulating yurts
Bedding, saddle covers, storage bags
Dowries and ritual gifts
Weaving knowledge passed mother to daughter for centuries
Later Turkic-Mongol cultures (6th–13th centuries)
Sheep’s wool (main material)
Occasionally camel or goat wool
Natural dyes from: Madder root (reds)
Indigo (blues)
Onion skins, plants, minerals (yellows, browns)
Pile weaving (knotted rugs)
Flat weaves (like tekemet and syrmak)
Felt-making was just as important as knotting
