Bokhara carpet history originates from the Bokhara region of modern-day Uzbekistan in Central Asia, where Turkmen tribes, particularly the Tekke, first created these hand-woven, geometric rugs using soft wool. The rugs take their name from the city of Bokhara, an important Silk Road trading hub where these carpets were sold and gained international recognition. Today, while the name refers to this specific style, most Bokhara rugs are now hand-knotted in Pakistan, where artisans continue the traditional techniques with soft, high-pile wool.
