Chobi carpet history began in Lahore and weaving centers in the Pakistan-Afghanistan border region around the late 19th century, in response to North American demand for muted, antique-looking rugs inspired by traditional Persian designs. The name "Chobi," meaning "wood-like color," reflects the rugs' characteristic natural, earthy tones achieved with vegetable dyes and a stone-washing process that gives them an aged appearance. The modern Chobi rugs are a descendant of the popular Ziegler rug style, commissioned in Iran in the 1880s, and are now highly sought after in the West for their beautiful coloration and quality craftsmanship.
