Bijar carpets come from the town of Bijar in Kurdistan Province, western Iran. The region has been a major weaving center for centuries, and Bijar rugs are traditionally woven by Kurdish communities, whose textile culture is among the oldest in Iran.
Bijar carpets are famously nicknamed “Iron Rugs of Persia” because of their extraordinarily dense and durable construction.

Weaving Techniques:

  • After each row of knots, weavers hammer the wefts down with metal combs
  • This compacts the wool so tightly that the rug becomes stiff, heavy, and long-lasting
  • Unlike most Persian rugs, Bijars can lie flat for generations without curling or warping

Common Patterns:

  • Herati (fish) pattern – the most iconic Bijar design
  • Medallion layouts
  • All-over floral fields with geometric rigidity

Construction of Bijar

  • Deep madder red (signature Bijar color)
  • Navy blue, ivory, dark green, camel
  • Traditionally dyed with natural vegetable dyes
  • Thick wool pile
  • Cotton or wool foundation
  • Symmetrical (Turkish) knot
